East Coast Hip Hop

Bad Boy was founded by Sean "Puffy" Coombes, later known as Puff Daddy, and it had its own superstar, to rival Tupac, in the shape of Biggie Smalls, or the Notorious B.I.G. as he was also known. It also had a stable of talent which included JUNIOR Mafia and Ma$e. Surprisingly, Tupac and Biggie were not only rival rappers on rival record labels on rival coasts but they were also good friends.

Sean 'Puffy' Coombes launched his career as Puff Daddy with the song, "Missing You", a tribute to the late Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls. This set up the last years of the decade to be dominated by Hip-Hop. Songs like "Killing Me Softly" by the Fugees and "Hard Knock Life" by Jay-Z highlighted sampling, a constant practice of Hip-Hop, and they went on to become huge hits. While the Fugee's hit was a cover version, Jay-Z took a sample from the musical "Annie" much like Kool Herc first took other people's instrument breaks.
